Why does my bank give me a different rate?
This tool shows the mid-market rate — the real, unmarked exchange rate used between banks. Consumer services (your bank, PayPal, airport kiosks) add a markup on top, often 1–4% for banks and cards, and sometimes more at airport currency exchanges. Wise and a few other services are known for charging closer to the mid-market rate with a transparent fee.
How often are rates updated?
Once per business day, around 4pm CET, based on European Central Bank reference rates. Rates don't update on weekends or ECB holidays, so if you check on a Saturday you'll see Friday's rate. This is standard for free reference-rate APIs; real-time forex trading rates fluctuate by the second and aren't publicly available for free.
Can I convert cryptocurrency here?
No, this tool covers standard fiat (government-issued) world currencies only. Crypto exchange rates move far more rapidly and would need a different data source.
